Keyword Research That Drives Revenue (Not Just Traffic)
How to do keyword research that prioritizes revenue over vanity traffic: matching search intent, mapping keywords to pages, and finding the terms worth winning.
Plenty of keyword research produces a big spreadsheet and no revenue. The goal isn’t the most traffic, it’s the right traffic. Here’s how to research keywords that actually move the business.
Start with intent, not volume
Every search sits somewhere on a spectrum from “just learning” to “ready to buy.” A high-volume informational keyword can be worth less than a low-volume one with clear buying intent. Sort your candidates by intent first:
- Transactional (“buy,” “best,” “vs,” “near me”): closest to revenue. Prioritize.
- Commercial (“reviews,” “comparison”): researching a purchase. Strong.
- Informational (“how to,” “what is”): top of funnel. Useful for authority and capturing demand early, but not where you start.
Map keywords to the right page type
Intent tells you what kind of page should rank:
- Category and “best X” terms → collection or comparison pages.
- Specific product terms → product pages.
- Questions and how-tos → blog content.
Trying to rank a blog post for a transactional term (or a product page for a how-to) is a common, costly mismatch.
Find the winnable terms
You don’t need the biggest keywords, you need the ones you can realistically rank for and that convert. Look for:
- Terms where the current top results are weak or outdated.
- Long-tail variations with clear intent and less competition.
- Keywords competitors rank for that you don’t (the gap).
Prioritize ruthlessly
Score each keyword on three things: intent (how close to revenue), winnability (how hard to rank), and volume (how much demand). The best opportunities are high-intent, winnable, and have enough volume to matter, in that order.
Then build around topics, not one-offs
Group related keywords into clusters and build content that covers the topic thoroughly. That’s how you earn topical authority and rank for dozens of related terms from a coherent set of pages.
