How to Rank in the Google Map Pack

The three-part formula behind local rankings, and a practical guide to getting your business into the Google map pack for the searches that matter.

By Nextwave ·

For local businesses, the map pack (those top three results with the map) is the most valuable real estate in search. Most clicks go there. Here’s how to earn a spot.

Google weighs three things

  1. Relevance: how well your business matches the search. This is mostly your Google Business Profile.
  2. Distance: how close you are to the searcher. You can’t change your location, but you can target the right service areas.
  3. Prominence: how well-known and trusted you are. This comes from reviews, citations, and links.

Work all three, and you climb. Here’s the priority order that moves fastest.

1. Optimize your Google Business Profile

  • Choose the most accurate primary category, and add relevant secondary categories.
  • Fill out every field: services, hours, attributes, and a keyword-aware description.
  • Add real photos regularly. Active profiles rank better.
  • Post updates. It’s a small, underused signal.

2. Make reviews routine

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors, and often the deciding factor for the searcher. Build a simple system to ask happy customers right after a good experience. Volume, recency, and rating all matter.

3. Get your citations consistent

Your name, address, and phone number should match exactly across every directory Google checks. Inconsistencies erode trust.

Sponsor a local event, partner with nearby businesses, or get covered by local press. Links from your actual community carry real weight.
