Google Business Profile Optimization: A Checklist
Your Google Business Profile is the biggest lever in local SEO. A practical checklist to optimize it and win the map pack for the searches that matter.
For a local business, your Google Business Profile is the single most important thing you can optimize. It’s what gets you into the map pack, and it’s free. Most businesses fill it out once and forget it. Here’s the checklist to do it right.
Get the basics exactly right
- Primary category. Choose the most accurate one. This is a major ranking factor.
- Secondary categories. Add every relevant one that applies.
- Name, address, phone. Match them exactly to what’s on your website and other listings.
- Hours. Keep them current, including holidays. Inaccurate hours erode trust and rankings.
Fill out everything
Google rewards complete, active profiles.
- Write a keyword-aware business description.
- List your services or products with descriptions.
- Set your service area if you travel to customers.
- Add attributes (wheelchair accessible, women-owned, free wifi, whatever applies).
Add photos, regularly
Profiles with fresh, real photos get more views and clicks. Add new ones on a schedule, not just at setup. Interior, exterior, team, and product or work photos all help.
Make reviews a habit
Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and often the deciding factor for the customer. Build a simple system to ask happy customers right after a good experience, and respond to every review, positive or negative.
Use Google Posts
Posts (updates, offers, events) are a small, underused signal that keeps your profile active. A quick weekly post is worth the two minutes.
Keep citations consistent
Your name, address, and phone should match across every directory. Inconsistencies confuse Google and weaken trust.
Then scale it
If you operate in more than one location, each needs its own optimized profile and local page. That’s the core of a multi-location local SEO program.
