AEO vs SEO vs GEO: What's the Difference?

SEO, AEO, and GEO explained in plain language. What each term means, how they overlap, and where to focus as AI search reshapes how buyers find you.

The acronyms are multiplying. SEO you know. Now there’s AEO and GEO. Here’s what each one actually means, and how they fit together.

SEO: Search Engine Optimization

The classic discipline: getting your pages to rank in search engine results, mostly Google. It covers technical health, on-page optimization, content, and authority (links). The goal is a high ranking in the list of results.

AEO: Answer Engine Optimization

AEO focuses on winning the direct answer, not just a ranking. Think featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes, and voice-assistant answers. The work rewards clear, concise, well-structured answers to specific questions, often reinforced with FAQ schema.

GEO: Generative Engine Optimization

GEO is the newest: getting your brand mentioned and cited inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Instead of a link, you’re competing to be named in the answer itself. It rewards citable claims, structured content, strong entity signals, and brand mentions across the web.

How they overlap

These aren’t competing strategies, they’re layers of the same goal: being found when someone is looking for what you offer. The good news is that the underlying work reinforces itself:

  • Clean technical foundations help all three.
  • Clear, structured, well-sourced content helps snippets and AI citations.
  • Strong brand presence off your site lifts both authority and AI visibility.

Where to focus

Start with solid SEO fundamentals, because everything builds on them. Layer in AEO structure (clear answers, FAQ schema) as you publish. Then invest in GEO early, while most competitors still haven’t noticed the shift. That early-mover window is the real opportunity.
